the CURRENT SESSIONS: Volume IV, Issue I.

The CURRENT SESSIONS is a NYC-based dance organization and presenting series that represents the works of early and midcareer choreographers and movement-based artists. We seek to provide a place for contemporary dance to thrive, serving as an incubator for the furtherance of our choreographers’ artistic visions. Volume IV, Issue I. will feature 12 choreographers and 2 guest artists in 4 diverse programs, with a primary focus on works that have a dance theater/performance art influence and dance with media/technology-based collaborations.

I will be performing rise, an ongoing solo investigation inspired by the collision of city and nature, memory, past and present, and my continued explorations of embodiment.  The work is accompanied by the droning chords and environmental recordings of electronic sound artist Derek Morton. I'll be in performing Saturday @ 7:30pm, and Sunday @3pm, with the Talkback. I will also be offering a 2 hour Lab/workshop, Body as Field, on Wednesday March 5th, 2-4pm.

Class Level: ALL LEVELS  *Attending a workshop entitles you to a discounted ticket of $15 at the door only to the performance if your choice!

Lab Description: We are physical beings existing within a physical world, and yet too often as dancers it is too easy to over identify with that world, ignoring the invisible landscape within, and the forces that move through us and around us. Within this laboratory/workshop we will philosophically and experientially approach the body not as a physical object to be controlled, but rather as a field or instrument through which forces of sound, light, thought, memory, emotion, space and time are passing through. Using somatic practices, Yoga, and improvisational scoring as the gateway through which we access the invisible inner flow and terrain of the body, we will sense and feel, move and be moved, see and be seen, experiencing the continuous stream of consciousness through the physical field.

….the eyes move, the body shifts, the building responds….

The INSERT [      ] HERE project is a performative experiment in embodiment, co-directed by contemporary dance artists Nick Bryson (Ireland) and Sharon Mansur (Washington, DC) employing imaginative notions of insertion via kinetic, spatial, aural and visual realms.   This work is evolving from Mansur and Bryson’s unique international partnership, involving creative practices in somatics and dance, along with contributions from collaborating artists.

Invited on a promenade throughout the recently renovated Dance Place building, the audience steps into a timeless suspension, a respite from typical daily rhythms.  Performers and audience together create an intimate and meditative space, cultivating a gradual unfolding of relationships to time and sensation, sight and perception, space and place.

INSERT [   ] HERE is supported, in part, by a University of Maryland Creative and Performing Arts Award, the Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts and the Birr Theatre and Arts Centre, Ireland.

Open Rehearsal August 27 @ 7:30pm

Performances August 28 & 29 @ 7:30pm

Starting Site: Anita's Way, 133 West 42nd Street (the through block connecting 42nd and 43rd streets, between 6th Ave. and Broadway), NYC

Ending Site: One Bryant Park Urban Garden Room, corner of West 433d Street and Avenue of the America's (6th Avenue), NYC

This event is Free and open to the Public. No tickets are necessary. Audience members are encouraged to wander, and come and go as they like. The performance ritual begins at Anita's Way, and travels down the 42 Street corridor, ending at The Urban Garden Room.

AUGUR is a multi-media, collaborative, migrating performance work investigating the essential search for meaning through the framework of contemporary oracle, concepts of divination, altered states of consciousness, and ritual performance. Defined as the official in the classical world who was responsible for portending events through reading the flight patterns of birds, Augur combines dance installation, sound, projected image, imbued object, and migration pathways to shift and transform the experience of the mundane in the bustling 42nd street district of NYC.

Through the interruption of the ordinary in the corridor of Anita’s Way to a series of images behind glass at One Bryant Park Urban Garden Room, AUGUR will encourage subtle interaction and intimate exchange, creating space for connection, curiosity, and mystery.
